I guess Japan are in it because Brazil has (I think) the largest Japanese population outside of Japan, or at least a significant community, and Qatar are in it because they gave passports to loads of Brazilians to make their national side competitive.

That's next year.
What I can't get my head around is that they played it back to back a few years ago, I assumed for some calendar/year moving reasons, but now they are doing the same thing again to get it on to the Euros schedule - I think the federation centenary may have had something to do with it but you'd think they'd be able to organise themselves better than having a supposedly quadrennial tournament 4 times in 6 years. :cab:

They really have botched it with the date move (it belongs in February) and the expansion to 24 teams. The bottom third of the teams will be absolute dross.

Here is my preview:
- Egypt will win.
- Gael Bigirimana (ok) and Saido Berahino (wtf!) are playing for Burundi.
- Tanzania are dons.
- Ivory Coast are now shit. It was good while it lasted.
- Clarence Seedorf is the manager of Cameroon. I don't think the world is ready for that.
- Zimbabwe have players named: Talent, Knowledge, Divine, Teenage (he is 23), Knox, Marvellous, and Edmore. Presumably they are hoping for a team defined by nominative determinism.
- Egypt will win.
I thought Berahino had received an England cap at some point, but obviously not.

Seems to happen for a lot of top forwards stuck at mid-level nations. Lewandowski plays like that too.

Available on a free after failing in Scotland according to Wiki.
I've watched ten minutes of the Nigeria game and it's probably the lowest quality of football I've seen since we were in the fourth tier. It's abysmal.
That goalkeeper should be sent home immediately for diving five yards outside his post to save a forty yard shot that wasn't close to on target.
I thought watching Scotland play was bad. The standard of this Burundi v Nigeria game has been shocking.
Is this typical for afcon? Imagine Senegal will pound these chumps and the rest?
Seems John has the same view.
That's a lovely goal though.

Where's this?
An example I've seen is "highest ever international goalscorers" and all the top ones are women.
It's jarring at first but to be honest if/when womens football becomes more competitive across the board the highest scorers will probably seem like an anomaly in the womens game too once it's not just much more organised and professional teams smashing no-marks about.

England's leading goalscorer in World Cups is some woman apparently (maybe joint).
Although I don't know why it isn't extended to age group as well, after all, they are World Cups, are they not?
It's just tiresome. I don't know why women's sport can't just be enjoyed on its own terms. It's quite entertaining for the most part (the football that is). It doesn't need some forced, and frankly false, equivalence with the men's game.

Agree entirely. It's patronising in the extreme.
Saw it the other day on Marta being the all time top goalscorer in world cups across both genders. They're different competitions ffs.
The men on the BBC are constantly referencing male footballers. Which I get that that's what they know but is that really what people promoting the womens game want? Or do they want to make people who don't normally relate to it by going "Oh whatserface is actually a bit of a Shearer-type striker for the team...."
It doesn't seem like it'd be that hard to educate people on it. Player X reminds fans of the team of Player Y off've the past, [brief highlight reel of both], job done.
As has been said they're just desperately going "Oh it's just as good! Honest!" When I've found an evenly-matched game I've enjoyed what I've seen of the World Cup so far.

From what I've seen England seem to be exclusively winning in a way that you'd be fucking seething about if it were Football Manager. Norway should've have, what, two tonight? Three?

Do Colombia still kill players who score own goals and miss penalties? Tesillo better watch out after Chile beat Colombia 5-4 in the shootout and he missed.

Can someone summarise what’s the deal with her? I tried to read an article about her today, but gave up quickly as it was so American I couldn’t go on after the first few paragraphs.

She kneeled during the national anthem, protests, advocates gays and generally seems to be everything Donald Trump doesn't like. That's my take on it at least.
You can't win a World Cup without a gay though so someone alert Southgate.
Ah, alright. Thought there would’ve been more to that.

She went down like a sack of shit against the French yesterday claiming to have been badly fouled and then VAR rolled in and showed there was basically no contact. I'm never too bothered about overly opinionated sportsfolk, but, for me, that sealed the deal.

Also finished 0-0 in the Peru vs Uruguay game. Suarez was the only player to miss during the penalty shoot-out. He had to be carried off in some of the Uruguayans players arms. He was crying very bad.

It's a massive thing for them as the centre of their national foundation myth, whereas we had plenty of other colonies so no biggie really.

USA should win easily at women's football, as they should win at every non-global sport, because their collegiate sports programmes are drenched in money for athletes to grow up playing their sports without an economic necessity to earn from them, and no other country has that privilege.
Every team that isn't the USA is a massive underdog for that reason - it's the same in golf, in tennis, athletics, swimming etc etc etc.
