Croatia 1, Iceland 2.

Argentina are going to get fucked.

mugbull

They'll get out of the group no sweat. Nigeria are a mess at the back and Iceland's 2 best players are coming off injuries (and their 3rd best wasn't even called up due to injury), so I think Argentina and Croatia will get through easily.

Amigo
25-05-2018, 12:12 AM
Kolbeinn Sigþórsson is a good player and everything (when fit) but calling him the third best player for Iceland is dubious.

He didn't play a single game in qualifying and the last game he played for Iceland was in the quarter-finals against France in 2016. He's been a complete non-factor for two years.

Wouldn't surprise me if he's finished as a footballer.

Baz
25-05-2018, 09:59 AM
Yeah argentina have too many good players to not perform. Sure they only just qualified but they did qualify, and the World Cup is a massive stage, so everyone in their team will be well up for it.

Argentina are trash. The defence is lol and the attack doesn't work. But yeah, they should come 2nd.

CJay
25-05-2018, 10:54 AM
I thought Sampaoli might get them figured out, but they really just don’t seem to work as a team. Bad defence, average midfield, with a couple of great attackers, which in a knockout tournament can often be enough to go a long way.

Messi is 30 now. I suspect it’s now or never for him. He might still be knocking about at 34 but his game relies on quick feet, and all the drugs in the world won’t prevent ageing.

Haven't caught up on thread but that Pavon trip not being called back for a VAR review is exactly why VAR is fucking useless.

Buddy of mine said "he went down soft that's why they didn't call it" I replied "he's literally stepped on his foot what the fuck is the point of this shit?"

There's too much discretion as to when it's used and when it isn't. I hate to bring it up again but this shit happens in MLS every week. Last week they said one of the Orlando City players stepped on a guy in the box, replay clearly shows he won ball and didn't touch him, but since they didn't call for VAR nothing was changed. Later in the same match, they looked at what seemed to be a pretty straight forward foul, went to VAR, and while they did nothing but uphold the decision to give a yellow, it's too inconsistent.

If there's a referee supposedly watching the screens and in contact with the official on the field how can it be such a pick-and-choose exercise?

I pray that it doesn't happen in that way where a pretty obvious thing that should've been reviewed and reversed is ignored but something else isn't. The VAR-pocalypse really is imminent if they're half as incompetent as our refs (unlikely but possible).

Croatia has sent Nikola Kalinic home for refusing to come on as a late sub against Nigeria.

I'm sure they had headlines when USA "beat" England 1-1 too. Good to see they're learning as they embrace the sport.

The "Underdog beats Favourite by a tied score" thing is an American commentary staple, and the commentators always think they're being so clever when they pull it out.

Waffdon

That Argentina team looks fucking shite.

Argentina playing 3 at the back and still not playing Dybala over some amateur is mental.

There must be something in the story about Messi not wanting him in the team. You couldn't leave him out.

There's no way Argentina can end this game with 11 on the pitch.

Pepe

Argentina is a mess. Starting by their manager.

Argentina are all over the place. Croatia are winning this fairly comfortably barring Messi doing what Ronaldo did against Spain.

This will definitely be Argentina shitting out a 1-0 win.

I heard on one of the podcasts, may have been totally football show, that Messi doesn’t like him. Same could be said about Icardi but it’s easier to leave him at home when you have Aguero and Higauin.

His runnin stats from the first game were lower than some goalkeepers I think.

He’ll be retiring from international football now anyway, but I don’t think Argentina will be any better off without him.

Although they can still qualify of course..

I don't even know if it's that. He wanted to retire during qualifying but was brought back. The management's got it in their head that he's the focal point Argentina need. It's not. It's poison.
